Macmillan is always looking to move into exciting new areas of publishing, and this is exemplified by a new title that is coming in early 2008, Aviation English. From 5th March 2008, all pilots flying internationally, as well as air traffic controllers managing international traffic, must demonstrate proficiency in plain English (based on the ICAO level 4 guidelines). This new regulation has been brought in to ensure pilots and air traffic controllers alike are communicating without trouble - which should make us all feel a bit happier next time we get on a plane!
The Guardian newspaper recently ran an interesting article about graded readers, interviewing a number of publishers about the rise in popularity of these simplified books. Our Readers Publisher was quoted in the article:
“Of course the classics still sell very well,” says Emily Rosser of Macmillan Readers. “The challenge has been to provide something for everyone and produce a wide range of titles that will motivate reluctant readers to pick up a paperback. Teenage boys, for example, are notoriously difficult to please.”
A trip to the palace was in order for some Macmillan people recently for the annual English Speaking Union Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Carol Read was awarded a “Highly Commended” for her new book 500 Activities for the primary classroom. She was accompanied by Adrian Underhill and Jill Florent, editors of the Macmillan Books for Teachers series.
Over the last few months we’ve been getting behind the camera and filming some of our authors in action. Below you can see a sample of Adrian Underhill, giving a workshop on pronunciation to a group of teachers.
